What muscles can be targeted with HI-EMT?
HI-EMT can be used to target the abdominal muscles, the gluteal muscles in the buttocks, muscles of the thighs and shoulders. HI-EMT
is especially good at strengthening the core with studies
demonstrating almost 16% increase in muscle size in the abdomen.
Studies have also demonstrated increased abdominal mass growth in
up to 95% of patients after a full course of treatment. Overall satisfaction levels are very high for treatment of all muscle groups
especially in the buttock region
How does HI-EMT work?
Electromagnetic muscle stimulation is an energy-based treatment that has been used for some time. It is recognised as a safe and effective treatment for musculoskeletal conditions as well as resistance training. Currently, the only way to strengthen core muscle groups is a physical workout. HI-EMT technology can induce almost 20,000 pulses in a single 30-minute session. That amounts to more than 10,000 sit ups! These pulses stimulate nerves leading to supramaximal muscle contractions (100% muscle contraction) which are not achievable through exercise. The muscles are forced to adapt resulting in muscle thickening. Muscles become stronger, more resistant and grow in size.
Can HI-EMT reduce fat?
Yes! Research on high intensity muscle training has shown that a fat destroying (lipolytic) reaction takes place in fat lying next to contracting muscle. HI-EMT treatment has been found to simultaneously affect the subcutaneous fat as well as muscle by boosting fat metabolism in a similar manner. Scans of patients following HI-EMT treatment have found reductions in fat as well as increases in muscle size. These changes in fat reduction are long lasting as long as you maintain your weight with good diet and regular exercise. Studies have shown on average 19% reduction in fat along with 15% increase in muscles around the tummy.
What sort of results can I expect?
A single session of HI-EMT results in 20,000 pulses resulting in 20,000 'supramaximal' muscle contractions. 'Supramaximal' muscle contraction: are when the entire muscle contracts as opposed to just 20% to 30% as is the case in a physical workout session. The end result is hypertrophy (increase in size of individual muscle fibres) and hyperplasia (increase in the number of muscle fibres as a whole).
Studies have shown, on average, a 16% increase in muscle mass after a session of 4 treatments. This is seen in the abdominal muscles including the lateral obliques as well as the rectus abdominis. A further benefit in the abdominal muscles is a reduction in the gap between the left and right rectus sheath. This is known as rectus diastasis and is very common after pregnancy. Reducing this gap through physical exercise is extremely difficult. Overall improvement in waist circumference is also achieved thanks to associated fat reduction.
Similar gains are seen in the gluteal muscles of the buttocks, shoulders and arms and the quadriceps and hamstrings.
Who is best suited for HI-EMT?
HI-EMT works well for both men and women. It is excellent for muscle building and fat reduction in those whose BMI ranges from 19 through to 30. Studies have shown that levels of satisfaction are greater for patients with a larger BMI although the effects are more visible in slimmer patients. Electromagnetic pulses are able to travel approximately 6 to 7 cm. Those with fat greater than 3.5cm on pinching tend not to benefit as much. HI-EMT is also excellent for women who have had children and are suffering with rectus diastasis - splitting of the abdominal muscles. HI-EMT is also excellent for those suffering with joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or chronic fatigue syndrome. It allows for muscle toning and strengthening without putting undue pressure on joints.
Does HI-EMT hurt and is there any downtime?
There is minimal discomfort associated with HI-EMT. By the 2nd or 3rd session patients are usually able to tolerate powers of up to 100% without any discomfort. There is minimal discomfort afterwards. There is no downtime associated with HI-EMT and patients are able to continue with all their normal daily activities.
How long do the results last?
As long as a good diet is maintained and weight kept steady the visual effects of HI-EMT treatment are well maintained. Studies of patients receiving HI-EMT treatment have demonstrated that muscle maintains increased size and strength even after a year. This is in contrast to EMS where the effects are temporary.
How many treatment are recommended?
At Astley Body Sculpt we recommend treatment packages of 4 or 8 sessions per muscle group. These sessions can normally be twice a week and last 30 minutes. Following these intensive sessions we recommend a single maintenance session every month to continue to strengthen, tone and maintain results.
Can this treatment replace exercise?
HI-EMT is excellent as an intensive approach to muscle building, strengthening and toning. However, it does not replace regular exercise. The benefits of regular exercise go far beyond just strength building. The physical benefits of exercise include maintaining cardiovascular fitness as well reducing the incidence of common medical problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The endorphin release associated with exercise has mental health benefits as well. However, for those who are unable to perform physical exercise due to joint pains, injuries and lack of energy, HI-EMT is an excellent option.
